Health Code
Regulations for Arlington County, City of Alexandria, Fairfax County, Fairfax City, City of Falls
Church, Town of Herndon and Town of Vienna require that all restaurants and food service
establishments including those in schools, pre-schools, senior centers, and recreational facilities are under the immediate control of an individual who
possesses a current Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) License during all
hours of operation. Failure to comply may result in immediate closure
of the establishment by the local Health Department. To acquire or renew a Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) License, it is necessary for everyone to take an approved food safety exam in a proctored testing environment and attain a passing score.
NOTE: Receiving a passing score on an accredited food safety exam is imperative. However, this by itself is not sufficient because, in order to be in compliance with local Health Code Regulations, all persons designated by their restaurant or establishment as a Food Manager must also obtain a Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) License. Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Licenses can be obtained from ORS Interactive, Inc. which issues the Licenses through a consortium agreement between Arlington County, City of Alexandria and Fairfax County.

Categories of Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Licenses
There are two categories of Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Licenses - Standard and Limited. A "Limited Foodservice Establishment" is defined as those which typically serve hotdogs, pre-cooked food items that are heated and served, prepackaged foods or other types of food that are not potentially hazardous. All restaurants and foodservice establishments which are not classified as “Limited” by their local Health Department are required to have their personnel meet the criteria for the Standard Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) License. It is the responsibility of each person applying for a Standard Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) License or a Limited Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) License to know the correct classification of their establishment. Those who are uncertain of their establishment's classification should contact their local Health Department before making application for a Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) License.
